EOY 2009

EOY, the annual cosplay event in Singapore has been taken over by a new committee who call themselves the “THE EOY Team”. Well they did quite a good job.The new venue at the National Library has more space outside. Its a bit clamp inside.The lighting outdoors was quite bad than to EXPO. I had to use Flash to get rid of the yellow lighting. Performances and concert are missed out by a lot of people due to the limited space of the theater. The conference hall in EXPO is much way better.I missed out on the performances....

AFA 09 Review

Sorry everybody for the much delay (very late) as i am too preoccuiped with my studies. Hee

Anyway, I will be posting a photo report on AFA 09 here which took place on the 21-22 November 2009. Anime Festival Asia aka AFA is an anime convetion event with much more which takes place on an annual year basis. This year's event being the second time its held.

AFA 09 was held Suntec Convention and Exhibition Hall, Singapore. Its the same venue as the previous year. This year the cosplayers
got lucky, the third floor is empty of event and free for them roam about ! Here are the pictures of the AFA09 event.

AFA09 press and bloggers conference

Anime Festival Asia an event focusing on Japanese animation and popular culture, ones again returns at 2009. AFA2008 was a highly successful event that attracted many people even from other countries. This year, AFA is going to be bigger and better than last year. The impact of AFA’s success in South East Asia will be reach far and wide.

For the first press conference and the bloggers conference of this year’s Anime Festival Asia. The event organizers released many details that would attract many to attend the event on the 21st and 22nd of November.

Not only that, they left hints for us to figure out. Like the Danny Choo’s ( Don’t say lazy ) video, that was shown on the first press conference.

And the videos in the AFA face book section, that grows with more contents up till the bloggers conference. It already had about 10.6k followers !

The first highlight which I want cover first is the ‘I Love Anime Song’

This time there will be 5 artist flying down to Singapore. Surprise, both Aniki and May’n will be back this time.

Following them will be :

Shoko Nakagawa the singer of the opening theme of Gurren Lagaan anime series. She is a multitalented artist, ranging from being an idol, voice actress, blogger. Fans know her as ShokoTan. Here is a video : Shokotan sings "hare-hare yukai"

Yoshiki Fukuyama a member of the JAM Project. He is the singing voice of Nekki Basara of Macross 7. There are rumors that May’n and Fukuyama will be performing on the same day….. hmmm. A video of 突撃ラブハート (Duet Ver.) Live

Virtual Idol “Hatsune Miku” is also to perform. I got a feeling that it would be like her performance in Animelo09. Crypton Future Media, the creator with SEGA’s PSP game ‘Hatsune Miku –Project DIVA-‘ , will be bringing Hatsune Miku to life in Singapore for her very first overseas appearance. Below is a PV of her singing 'nebula' a song which is my favoutite.

K-On! Seiyuu coming to AFA09. It will be The K-ON! Experience. This will defiantly attract many fans to attend. The seiyuu of K-ON! will make an appearance for the first time overseas at AFA09. The cast will be doing a live dubbing a scene from the animation, in addition to a Q&A session on the main stage, accessible to all attendees. K-On merchandise are going to be flying off the shelves !

Also a Maid Cafe being set up in the event itself. The girls who will be serving at the cafe during the event, have the looks, personality and enthusiasm. Having been to Pinafore Maid Café at Akihabara, I don’t expect the settings to be accurate but closed … I can vision the long queue for the cafe itself. One may wonder.. what’s important, the maids or the food…hee.

For events like AFA, cosplay also form part of its attractions. This year cosplay will have a bigger presents in the form of AFA Regional Cosplay Competition. It is to reach out and open to the cosplayers of South-East Asia countries. It also create a chance for Singapore cosplayers to compete and network with other countries cosplayers.

One of the judges of the competition will be Kaname a very popular professional cosplayer, from Japan). Entry submissions is to made via dannychoo.com, plus the deadline had been extended to 12th October 12pm Japan Time, due to good responses. Top prize will be a pair of return tickets to Tokyo!

For the Animation Studios, AFA09 has managed to bring in a few heavy weights this year. They will be having their own booths.

Tatsunoko Productions, the company that animated classics such as Macross and Gatchaman.

Madhouse. Their recent works include Death Note, Chaos;Head, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and the upcoming Summer Wars.

Bandai will also make a big come back to AFA09 with its 30th Anniversary occasion. The main feature will be a time tunnel showcasing the 1st Gundam series to the latest. They will be showcasing their Chokogin and other models.

How I wish they could bring in the Gundam 00 1/60 model for display. There will be a Bandai World Wide Gunpla competition in conjunction with dannychoo. And Bandai Action Kits Universal Cup Competition 2009, which winners will then go on to compete with winners from other countries at the grand finals.

And yes specking of Danny Choo, he will be fly down to Singapore for the event. He is famous for his blog covers and dressing up as a Stormtropper dancing in down town Tokyo. I do enjoy his videos. He will be a key speaker at the AAC, as well as hosting certain items at the event itself. Here is a video of him as a stromtrooper.

Genesis Frontier and KKnM are introducing Bushiroad and COSPA into AFA09.

Local fans in Singapore can now easily get their COSPA stuff anytime by heading to KKnM. Rather than ordering online. Even better, AFA09 will host Singapore’s 1st ever Weiβ Schwarz Grand Prix.

The normal ticket prize will be S$15 for a day and S$25 for both days.

Student ticket prizing will be S$12 for a day and S$20 for both days

The concert ticket will be prize at S$108 for a day and S$188 for both days. It will also cover the entrance fee too.

There will be free entry for children under the age of 12 and for cosplayers who meet adequate standards for the event.

The ticket prize is defiantly more than last years. But I do feel that this years event content is worth the money. And the AFA organizers also do take into consideration to have discounts for students, as they are not working yet. Kudos to them!

Anime Festival Asia will be at Suntec Convention Hall 403-404, on the 21st(Sat) to 22nd(Sun) of Nov 2009.

Coverage on Super Import Nights 2009

Back for the 3rd year, Super Import Cars, Super Import Babes, Neon lights and a whole lot of noise was at the Singapore Expo Hall 4 over the long weekend.
In the exhibition there are mixture of booths from both new car importers as well as aftermarket advertisers dealing with products such as window-tints, tyres and other performance items.

Subaru Challenge was staged at the event, with sponsored mini-drift rides, available to various contest winners.

But the event that attracts the most attention was of course, the SIN showgirls and models exhibit, where once again, photographers in possession of Canon cameras were not allowed to enter the up-front staging area as it was an exclusive Nikon-sponsored event.

Too bad, I am a canon user. I had to use zoom lenses at stage events.

However, that did not stop the many photographic opportunities taken by show-goers, what with international import personalities.

Feeling like you missed out already? Maybe next year...hee

During the first day of the event. A growing crowd of people and photographers alike begin to swarm around a particular car exhibit. Usually this happens when there is are showgirls around. But this crowd stay there for 3 hours ... even after i left the hall, they are still there !

A.C.M.E and Gundam Fesita

Gundam Fiesta Singapore 2009 is held at Compass Point from the 2nd to 14th September and the admission is free. It is also the celebration of the gundam 30th anniversary. In this event, it shows the public the ‘inside’ of Gundam, such as the blueprint of the Gundam model and so on.

It featured new model kits from gundam variations and the Unicorn Gundam which will be a 6 part OVA.

Plus Every Gundam kit sold at the event is going at a 20% discount, and the 3-Kingdoms themed SD Gundam line has a big presence

Coverage of A Certain Magical Event that was held at Nafa on the 22 August

As per Charafest's or tradition every year, the KKnM team returns from the from Summer Comiket /Japan trip, with limited official anime chara-goods, and COSPA products.

WatzART was been held, and it also marks the come back of Singapore’s doujin event. It is a doujin-fair featuring both Singaporean and Malaysian doujin circles.

The Card Geeks, a Japanese moe-art collectible card game retail shop will also be present together with Gunpla specialty hobby store – Hobby Art Gallery

There are quite a lot of people present there, and involved in this event, with big local doujin names like CDS. It is also a place for fellow friends and fans to meet up, to have fun. Overall I see the event as a big success. Hope it will be even better andf bigger next year !

Due to busy job commitment, I only had to chance to go on the last day. Spent 2 hours and rushed off to watch G.I.JOE the movie…ha ha. The cosplay events have a lot of new faces. Great to see that cosplaying is getting more attention and accepted. Not like in its heydays in Singapore around 10 years ago. May they keep it up.

NDP2009 and Youth Olympics Fireworks

In events worth of celebrations, there are bond to be fireworks. Fireworks had become more complicated and breathtaking to view. It is the same as this year, Singapore National Day Parade 2009. These pictures are taken at the Clifford Pier. The rest of the places around event is parade is either full of people or block by the police. Here I join the groups of photographers, waiting patiently for the fireworks.

Well KL is first thing on my mine for makan and sightseeing, after a whole day at Daicon. With a group of friends we decided to go out to explore. KL usually will have traffic jams in many parts of the day, till at night. The night scene in is much better than in Singapore. People could stay long into the nights at coffee shops or cafes to chill out.

I like the buildings of old there. Don't see much in Singapore nowdays as most are renovated, till it looks new. And looks fake to me....

DaiCon2009 Review

Came back from DaiCon in KL CyberJaya on the 130709. Let me give you a review of this event. Thoughts of DaiCon to be a proper well-organized event are dashed, once I settled in the event hall. I don’t expect much from an event organized by the Uni student body. But at least some level of organization must be there. Some booth are not even ready yet or missing. Arrangements of how the booth requested by the exhibiter is not properly relay by the event planner. That leaves a bad impression fro the exhibiters.

Malaysia sure had good food to eat till we ate to our fill. The variety is a lot. Later at night one of the DaiCon organizer committee guy and 2 of his friends come over from the event hall to fetch us to our Hotel in KL. But it turns out to be a long trip as we are lost in KL traffic for an hour.

Day one DaiCon started off with a decent crowd flow.

HobbyMate booth displayed tools for modeling. The special price offer was fantastic.

From the displays of pvc figures by The Figure Mall to the dojin artwork by various dojin circles. The commercial and government booths are also present to promote and selling of products. The Malaysian dojin circle impressed me most.

Cosplay was pretty well done. Photographers would swam over to take photos and create temporary chock points that block passageways to other booths. The competition stage event for cosplay was fun and funny too with a dance trooper who entertains the crowds with his Michael Jackson moves.

The K-On cosplay team was great! The Mio cosplayer got the most attention as she was in the anime.

Day two, group cosplay was good also. Many did pay attention to the details of the costumes. I did notice for the two days event the popular cosplayers will usually go for private shoots requested by photographers.

Unfortunately this was a closed door event. Blue high wall partitions were place between stage area and the booth section. Many people of course are upset of this decision and some attempted to take photos over the partitions.

At one time a crowd did form in font of KKNM blocking the main entrance to the stage. The jan-ken-pon game was fun to watch even you are not a participant because it was executed nicely by the cosplayers.
I can say KKNM has the most crowds in DaiCon and also AFA08, their queue was the longestog all.

The last day was the main core event, Chihara Minori mini concert. It was highly anticipated by everybody and the anxious waiting for 3pm to arrive. You could imagine how messy is it as there are people queuing for KKNM and the crowds started to gather at the concert entrance.

I wonder what was on the management heads when they switch off lights of the entire hall at 2pm, leaving every one in darkness. I believe this is done for Minori’s arrival that someone doesn’t care about the rest of the event anymore and just focus on the concert. The lights went off when people are still doing business, photographers taking photos of cosplayers and various activities.
It was so lucky that no one hurt them selves, molested, products stolen in the darkness. I saw groups of dojin booth owners outside the hall expressing displeasure. The lights only come on at about half an hour later.

Before the concert starts, the Japanese hardcore fans who come all the way to see her are well prepare with flags and light sticks. They are kind enough to issue out the limited amount of light sticks to other fans. Kudos to them!

Chihara Minori’s mini concert started with loud Chants of Minori’s name till she arrives on to the stage, singing the first song.

A shocking incident happens right after Minori’s concert ended. Why did it have to happen to both DaiCon and AFA08? Over Zealous fans?
Both events share something similiar, AFA got Mr “Kou Tou” and Diacon got Mr “Bottle Drinker”. This had case uproar and it had alearly spread to Sankakucomplex.com and maybe 2chan. All because of a Malaysian blogger who went up the stage and grap the mineral water bottle that Midori had consume from when she was performing. I saw it in front of my eyes and others did. We are just so shock and shouts ring out all over the place. The point of him taking the bottle to show around was thought as a stunt at first. But later I heard that he drank from the bottle ones he got out of the concert area... OMG

In any other events there are bound to be photographer who will annoy the hell out of people. From types having raging hormones, those who like to stick to people like glue or downright rude and others. DaiCon have its share of them. I would not mention who they are but many people sure had seen them in ‘action’.

This self proclaim professional photographer with a black helmet whom I had taken notice, took many endless photos of KKNM cosplayers. He even squat down to took pics while the girls are standing up, an attempt for an up skirt shot, but friends of KKNM are always on the look out. I had seen him many times over at their booth. He appears to be very interested in one of the cosplayers and try to ask her for email and contact number. Even come close to stalking. Finally he was told off by the staffs of KKNM.

Another who likes to stick to people like glue. Just because he had some friends at the KKNM booth, he keeps on coming for a visit or just stands there. Never thinking that KKNM is doing business and their booth can be very crowded. And he is not small size for your information. Saying of thick faced or blur, he even come along for the KKNM cosplayers private shoot, even he had no rights to join in. No words for me to describe.

Malaysian Kelong Fishing Trip

It has been years since i done fishing, that was during the secnodary days. A couple of my sec school friends ask me out for a fishing trip to Pasir Gopok at the easten side of johor. The amount if people for this trip grew to about 20.

The trip to the kelong consist of a trip to the johor main to clear the customs and back to the boat again to the kelong. Passing by, a huge land reclaim project is underway on the island of tekong where every singaporean guys dread to go.. holiday camp anyone ? n_n "

The boat ride is bumpy all the way. Onces we reach the kelong, we rested and prepare our fishing gear. The living space is quite run down and the food provided during dinner is quite ok to my taste. A rather enjoyable exprience. I recommanded people who wants a escape of city life, this is a place to go. Not just the kelongs but other places of as well in malaysia...

Changi Beach

Recent photo trip to the Changi Beach went out with secondary school friend whom i had not been in contact with him for years. Long talks on pass events and camera shooting tips fill our conversation topics. It just make me reliase time fly so fast and i miss the school life....

Changi Beach had change much since the last time i went there for a Ubin trip. With alot of walkways builded. Trasforming to a place good for fishing.

Marina Barrage

Built across the mouth of the Marina Channel, the Marina Barrage creates Singapore’s 15th reservoir. The Marina Barrage is part of a comprehensive flood control scheme to alleviate flooding in the low-lying areas in the city such as Chinatown, Boat Quay, Jalan Besar and Geylang.

Last week, i got a chance to follow a group of friends to have a first time visit.

To get there, you can either board the shuttle bus which arrives every 15 minutes or service 400 once you exit Marina Bay station and alight at the once lively steamboat eating area. From there it is just a short walking distance away.

On our arrival there, we were already greeted with a sunshine which soon turned into a rain storm. Obviously, for the most part, we were just staying indoors away from the rain.

I had decided to go when the weather is good enough. The weather during friday around late afterron was superb with intense blue sky. These are the photos i had taken.

Trip to Kyoto and Osaka 2009

A trip to japan again since 2007 was not on my travel plans, until my friend offer me a trip with him. The 2 trigger factors of why i should go again : The flight ticket was free cos of the SIA flight mailage system. Second the company i work in had ask staffs to take leaves from the 24th of Jan to the 3 Feb. All my leaves will be gone by then. Might as well uses the time for a trip.

It was cold there during the late January and Feb period.
A thick jacket or windbreaker is a must. Mostly I wear an inner-shirt, a sweater
and a jacket over. Usually is the wind that can freeze you.... at nights.

For camera, I will advise to keep it warm using body heat. Just tack it under your jacket. It would prevent condensation on the lenses when entering a warm room or space. I had my lenses cap on every time. My Canon 40D experience shutter error 2 times, when exposed to very cold conditions. Worst cases I heard before is total operational failure of a camera...

This second trip to Japan ( Kyoto and Osaka ) is quite memorable for me.
Long hours of walking, ( under light rain in nara ), nice scenery of temples, rural areas, getting lost at a suburban district and the cold..
I recommended people to travel free and easy, so as to experience Japan off the beaten track. You would see places normally tour groups wouldn't bring you too.

First stop is. Chionin Temple

This is the main gate entrance, to the temple. Shot is taken from inside the temple compound.

A steep climb up. Surprise to heard two guys in front of us say " Very Shack Sia ! Sian " Haha Singaporeans !!

In most temples or Shrines, remember to wash your hands before entry.

Heian Shrine Gate. There are a lot of Mainland china tourist there. Had to wait for a clear shot...

Gion Street, in downtown Kyoto. It is a famous spot for Geishas sightings. It gave a feel of old japan.I did see 2 Geishas in their colourful kimonos. But crowds of
people quickly surround them.

While relaxing along the rivers of Arashiyama, I happen a chance to take a shot of these....

The Fushimi Inari Shrine. We never know that there was a hill to climb throught all the tori gates. Was out of breath when we finish the path..... Lots of cats there !!

When we finally went to Nara it was raining lightly. There are lots of deers at the Todaiji Temple. They will mug people for food and can be a nuisance. Throughout the walk around the nara park and surround temples, the rain did become a bit heavier. It almost spolit the day in Nara. My Camera was quite wet but water did not get into the lenses. Ended the day, eating warm food at a inexpensive restaurant. Back to Kyoto we had bags to pack and perpare to leave for Osaka the next day.

Finally we took a train to Osaka. Leaving Kyoto. Osaka is a good for shopping and for its food. But the transport fee is expensive, is even more than Tokyo. Here we take our time for window shopping. Osaka is a place where you can relax and enjoy in its active nightlife and lights.

We eat at the sushi store just beside the store selling octopus balls. Did try out the octopus balls. It was good.

This place was at the Moriguchi subway station … the actual location of a scene in KEY’s KANON in the first animated episode. Looking for this place result in losing our way in a sub_urban distrct.

It had been almost 10 years since the last eclipse i saw when i was in poly.
That reminds me of the times i had in the Ngee Ann Astronomy Club.
Whenever i goes for a part time study in a uni, sometimes i would see members of the club having activities, is still alive and well..
Years had pass, but the wonders of Astronomy never ends to fascinate me.

The last eclipse in singapore was in 1998. This years eclipse will have 70% of the sun been covered. Indonesia will have their total eclipse in southen sumatra ans may be some parts of java. People obvious to their surroundings will notice a slight dim of the sun at around 530.

Below are pictures of the eclipse i taken with a good friend out in a big grass field near my place.... He manage to dig out his solar filter that was use before, when we are at the Ngee Ann Astronomy club back in the days in.

2009 what next...

2008 the year come and past quickly. Time sure flies.
Whats next for the year 2009 ? I don't have anything to look forward to execpt for my Kyoto trip ha..
Is it alearly seen as a doom and gloom year as the financal crisis had only begin to take its effects. The US had it mess up big time. Must save up money..who knows if kana retrench.
And the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas... the unfortunate cilvilians who are caught in between. For this conflict i personally feel that it is Hamas fault. They keep on firing rockets over the gaza border to Israel even the cease first deal was in effect. The Arab world did not say anything about it. When Israel hit back, they protest. This is very disgusting. And who will not react if someone keep one shooting at your house. Israel had been very very patience alearly, but this time theirs run out. Those Hama leadership sucks i say, they puposely had their buidings place among civilian areas. Recent news got information that the Hamas leaders are hiding in mosque and hospitals.... Haiz the never ending circle of violent. As long as humans exist there are never to be peace.
Thats why i aways hate it when people wish for world peace in new year wishes. Hope there will be but it will take a long long time to wait for.
I will take a step ata time for this new year. n_n ""

Goodbye Maj Norman Ang

I couldn't belive my ears when i first receive the news.
My friend MSN yesterday to ask me if i know Maj Norman Ang the former OC of 1 SIR Support OC 2001. Immediately i felt something was admiss. Than the news broke on a e-mail sent to me.
Maj Norman Ang had pass away on the 14th Dec 2008 at 2145, leaving behind his wife and 2 children, he's 34. Information from another friend, he was down with stage 4 cancer at march this year. He never smoke or drink and exercise often, and he was dmn fit. But unfortunaly cancer claim him. He got so much future in front of him, soo much... but it was cut short.

I remember him as a personal who works seriously, take care of men under his charge and never cease to crack jokes. He inspired people to give all their best all the way. And he is willing to listen to people, and will not shut them off.

He was my OC during my BMT time and also my OC for support coy when i was posted to 1 SIR as a combat medic to Bravo coy at first. Ha i was suprised to be under his charge again. The last i see of him was at seralang camp at 2005. I was working under a company to upgrade all the computers of that camp. I walk into his office one day to upgrade his labtop. He was suprised to see me walking in.... we got into a chat on our daily work and he wishes me the best of luck in career and life.

Never i could imagine, that would be the last time i meet him. Sadly i didn't manage to go to his wake, as by the time i receive the mail it is 17th of Dec. I wishes his wife and 2 children luck and be sucess in life.

The infamous kowtao man of AFA08

This pic of the guy who was infamous during the AFA08 event was finally release last week.

May'n is the singing voice of the char Sheryl Nome of the japanese anime Macross Frontier.
She had her very first live performance outside of Japan in Singapore at Anime Festival Asia 08 in November.

After May'n event is over she went over to her holding room to rest. A guy with a may'n concert vip pass slip pass the barrier gate.

It is until the event staffs reliase that he is going for May'n's room that they stop him. That guy even manage to westle with the staffs. He was stop than.

At the end he was let go, and he than KOWTOW in front of May'n's room... ( the above pic shows how ) he unrow a poster and beg
to let May'n sign. He even said that he is from PENANG and had travel very far to singapore.....

Finally, after looking at the SAD state of the guy and him begging... the staffs took pity of him and gave him a extra May'n and last signature board to him and ask him to leave..

The first ever singapore anime convention the Anime Festival Asia 2008 aka AFA08 is finally over after a wait of months of preparations and speculations. The 2 day event ended quite successfully without any serious hitches, except for a few.

Another was a one that involved with May’n, luckily it did not case a major big hoo haa. A fan manage to get to May’n room’s door and was block by the AFA organizer people. Even try to force his way in, till he was pinned down, by a huge guy…He just wanted to have May’n to sign on a poster, but her manager says no. Than he knee down to beg for her signature. That art surprises everybody.Eventually after much persistence by this craze fan, he was than led off by security.

I can say that it is a event that almost overshadowed the Singapore Toy and Comic Convention or STCC. Many people feel that AFA08 will kill STCC right off because of its good contents that are more appalling to anime fans. But this is not the case as I foresee that STCC can still survive as it’s contents are more for fans that are into ‘western’ comics and toys. There are still quite strong fan bases in Singapore.

Not only Singaporeans, AFA08 also attracted many fans from overseas, like from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonasia, HongKong, Japan, ….
AFA08 strong point is that this event manage to invite in famous people like Yasufumi Soejima , Koji Morimoto , Kunio Okawara from the Japanese anime industry and of course the singers like May’n, Ichirou Mizuki. These two singers attracted a huge crowd. The showcases and talks are informative.
It serves as a good platform for introducing Japanese anime based industry onto the local animators, fans and others alike.

Well done to all the organizer committee and the people who get involved in this event. Hope there will be a AFA09..
